James Brooks, MD

Dr. Brooks was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961 and remains very happy to have moved to Columbus in 1994.

He completed undergraduate studies in 1983 at LSU Baton Rouge, and was the Outstanding Graduate from LSU Medical Center in Shreveport in 1987. Internship and Ophthalmology Residency were performed at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he was honored to be selected as Chief Resident for 1990-91. Dr. Brooks is Columbus’ only Fellowship trained Cornea Specialist, completing the additional training at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

His practice includes general and specialty ophthalmology with interest and emphasis in:
    - Diseases and surgery of the cornea, including transplantation;
    - Cataract and lens implant surgery;
    - Laser refractive surgery(LASIK, PRK, etc.);
    - Corneal infections and complications of contact lens wear.

Dr. Brooks maintains active involvement and provides leadership in numerous professional committees and societies. He has served as President of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, President of the Muscogee County Medical Society and the Muscogee County Physician's Foundation, and Delegate to the Medical Association of Georgia. He has served as teaching faculty at Emory University Department of Ophthalmology. Other involvement has included the American Diabetes Association, Columbus Challenge, and local medical committees.

Community activities remain a priority for Dr. Brooks. He has served on the Executive Board for the United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, Young Life of Columbus, and the New Beginnings Adoption and Counseling Agency. He serves as a deacon at Edgewood Baptist Church, and volunteers as Board Member and Eye Clinic Coordinator for the Mission Columbus Medical Clinic. International missions include annual trips to the Mexican Indian Training Center in southern Mexico and occasional trips to other countries.

Dr. Brooks' family includes his wife Anne Marie and children Meghan, Drew, and Libby. His main hobbies consist of supporting his children in their activities, running, and water sports.
