Dr. Speakman has been practicing comprehensive ophthalmology at West Georgia Eye Care Center since 1991. He moved back to Columbus after leaving in 1971. He is the only doctor at West Georgia Eye Care Center who is from Columbus. He was educated through the excellent public school system, attending Edgewood Elementary, Richards Junior High, and Hardaway High School. He graduated Magna cum Laude and left Columbus to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College where he received the Ty Cobb academic scholarship and played varsity baseball.
After graduating from Veterinary College and practicing veterinary medicine for several years, Dr.Speakman returned to medical school, completing his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He completed an Internship in Internal Medicine and Residency in Ophthalmology at the same institution.
Dr. Speakman enjoys practicing comprehensive ophthalmology, managing a wide variety of eye problems in children and adults, including glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and strabismus. He performs numerous surgical procedures including cataract, glaucoma, and laser refractive surgery such as LASIK. He served as Chief of Surgery at Doctors Hospital for four years, and Chief of Ophthalmology at The Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital for one year each. He currently serves as treasurer for the Ambulatory Surgical Center of Columbus, and is on staff at local hospitals.
Dr. Speakman has been married to Charlene Speakman for over 30 years, has three children, a daughter-in-law and numerous cats. He enjoys activities with his family, golf, fishing, computing, and spectator sports. He and his family are active members of Christ Community Church.
