Dr. James Brooks

 

Dr. Brooks was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961 and remains very happy to have moved to Columbus in 1994.

 

He completed his undergraduate degree in 1983 at LSU Baton Rouge, and was the Outstanding Graduate from LSU Medical Center in Shreveport in 1987. Internship and Ophthalmology Residency were performed at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he was honored to be selected as Chief Resident for 1990-91. Dr. Brooks is a Fellowship trained Cornea Specialist, completing the additional training at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, South Australia in 1992.

 

His practice includes general and specialty ophthalmology with interest and emphasis in:

  • Diseases and surgery of the cornea, including transplantation
  • Cataract and lens implant surgery including multifocal lens implants
  • Laser refractive surgery (LASIK/PRK)
  • Corneal infections and complications of contact lens wear.

 

He is actively involved in leadership in professional committees and societies. He has served as President of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, President of the Muscogee County Medical Society, Delegate to the Medical Association of Georgia, and is the current GA Councilor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.


Community activities are a priority for Dr. Brooks, and he has served on the campaign committee and Executive Board for the United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, Young Life of Columbus, and the Lifeline Adoption Agency. He volunteers as Board Member and Eye Clinic Coordinator for the Good Shepherd Medical Clinic. International missions include trips to Mexico, Kenya, and other locations.  Dr. Brooks serves in the US Army Reserves Medical Corps.

 

Dr. Brooks' family includes his wife Anne Marie and children Meghan - a Physician Assistant student; Drew - a sophomore at the University of Georgia; and Libby – a fourth grader at St. Anne’s School.  His interests include running distance events.
