The Golden Rule
For many, the diagnosis of glaucoma can be anxiety provoking. The average person may not be able to define ‘glaucoma’, but they have a pretty good idea that they do not want it! In general, glaucoma is a disease of progressive vision loss characterized often by higher than normal eye pressure. The physicians at West Georgia Eye Care Center who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma understand the anxiety associated with being told that you have eye disease, and if there is a Golden Rule in eye care, it is to treat our patients the way we would like to be treated. Our doctors and staff have families, and their goal is to treat you and your family the way they would want their own to be treated. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with glaucoma, we want to be here for you.
WGECC is fortunate to have two board-certified glaucoma specialists (Dr. Bret Crumpton and Dr. Casey Geringer). These doctors provide medical or surgical treatment that is directed at meeting the needs of the individual patient. To that end, they stay current on technological advancements in medical and surgical glaucoma treatment options. They are the first in our region to offer some amazing new innovations. Today, there are tiny microscopic devices that can be implanted to treat glaucoma. One of those devices now being utilized is called the CyPass.
The CyPass is an implantable stent (stent = tube). It is inserted at the time of cataract surgery in the appropriate patient, thus 2 for 1 in a sense! The stent fits into the natural drainage canal, and occupies that space without any maintenance. The Cypass does not have as its goal any improvement in vision, but is meant to improve the eye pressure, thus limiting the progressive damage and vision loss that glaucoma can cause.
