If you have diabetes mellitus, the high levels of sugar in the blood damages the vessels in the back of the eye. The damage to retinal vessels is referred to as diabetic retinopathy, and most of the time, a person with diabetes will not notice a change in their vision until the disease has advanced past an easily treated stage.  Therefore, it is imperative that patients with diabetes receive routine eye exams.
