Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease caused by damage or breakdown of the macula, the small part of the eye's retina that is responsible for our central vision. This condition affects both distance and close vision and can make some activities-like threading a needle or reading-very difficult or impossible. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over 65.
The skilled ophthalmologists at West Georgia Eye Care Center are trained to evaluate for and manage macular degeneration. We have the latest in diagnostic equipment such as the OCT (optical coherence tomography) and fluorescein angiography to determine the best approach for you. Also available is a retinal specialist who may perform treatments to slow or even stop the progression of vision loss. We have a low vision clinic and support group for those affected by this disease.
